About the role
The Editorial intern at the Pulitzer Center is in the thick of it all: contributing and posting content for the Center’s website, getting the word out on Center events and activities, creating original website content, brainstorming ways to broaden the reach of journalists’ work, and more. The Editorial intern will mainly work with the Center’s Publishing team, under the supervision of the Publishing manager.
Responsibilities
- Build and post stories from journalist grantees and contributors to pulitzercenter.org (external post builds).
- Edit, build, and post blog updates, event listings, methodologies, author bios, and original content from staff and Fellows to pulitzercenter.org (internal post builds).
- Contribute "Behind the Story" pieces and other original blog content related to Center events, news, and impact — writing is a central component of this internship.
- Pursue an independent project that supports an existing Pulitzer Center program (e.g., helping design or run a webinar series, supporting a Center contest, or assisting an existing team).
- Contribute to the Center's social media presence across Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other platforms — including copywriting and content creation/design using Canva.
- Compile and coordinate the Center's weekly newsletter, managing content contributions across teams every two weeks.
- Support copy editing as needed.
- Attend mandatory all-staff meetings, Publishing team meetings, and Editorial proposal review meetings (once or twice a month).
- Maintain proactive, timely communication with your mentor and the Publishing team throughout the workday.
Additional Opportunities
Depending on organizational needs and your interests and bandwidth, you may also have the opportunity to:
- Collaborate with the Campus/Outreach team on event coordination (virtual or in-person).
- Support the K-12 Education team with virtual visits, the Fighting Words poetry contest, the Local Letters for Global Change contest, or writing lesson plans for the website.
- Work with the Reporting Fellows team on planning the Washington Weekend conference or promoting Fellows' stories.
- Assist with the production of graphic design and multimedia content for social media.
- Track and log Pulitzer Center impact from media mentions.
- Support website projects such as enhancements, new landing pages, or newsletter redesign initiatives.
Qualifications
- Strong writing and editing skills — you can adapt your voice to different formats and audiences.
- Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) or a willingness to learn quickly.
- Interest in international journalism, global affairs, or human rights reporting.
- Comfort with social media platforms and a basic understanding of digital communication strategies.
- Experience with or enthusiasm for design tools like Canva.
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple deadlines.
