Why It's a Great Opportunity: The Pierce County Summer Internship Program is back! This year, our program will run from 6/8/2026 through 8/28/2026. We are excited to offer opportunities that provide realistic and meaningful work experiences, while providing Pierce County Departments with interns who bring fresh perspectives and support to complete special projects. Interns are a part of a cohort that attend weekly activities together. These sessions include classes, project planning, and tours of various departments and facilities to learn about the County and the types of great job opportunities we offer. As a cohort, you will be responsible for a culminating group presentation before the Pierce County Council.

About the Department: The

Communications Department provides communication support to all three branches

of Pierce County government. Our goal is to provide strategic communications

counsel and create engaging and timely information about programs, projects,

activities, and actions taken by the County. The Communications Department is a

collaborative and team-oriented environment that works to provide outstanding

service to our internal clients and the public. The team in the department is

filled with passionate and talented communicators. The variety of work

assignments creates a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

About the Internship: This internship is such a fun an exciting way to use your skills and creativity to make a lasting impact on the community of Pierce County. This role specifically supports communications for our Human Services department. You will get hands on experience in marketing that helps County residents access critical services and other important information. Your work over the summer will meaningfully assist in better connecting people with their local government and other community partners. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain exposure to different communication elements; from writing to photography, to graphic design, to editing videos. You will also get to attend events like groundbreakings for affordable housing sites and other Human Services focused projects. 

How to be Successful in the Role:  Our ideal intern candidate has experience in basic graphic design and is proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products and Adobe Acrobat. To be successful, you will need a to be excited to bring information to the public through many different mediums (social media, graphic design, flyers, newsletters, videos, photography, etc.). In this role, you will also build relationships throughout Human Services, to better understand how Communications can support the work of the department and best get information out to the public. Being comfortable and skilled at talking with a variety of people, both internally and externally, and from all backgrounds, is a must. This is an exciting and fast paced team. The ability to remain flexible, creative, and to pivot when needed, will be crucial. If you are passionate about serving others by highlighting programs that help tackle the issues of poverty, access, and equity in our community, this could be the internship for you!

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • Attend meetings and check-ins for information gathering
  • Develop content for social media and websites
  • Create FAQ's for new programs
  • Assist in the design of internal and external marketing (flyers, newsletters, etc.)
  • Attend Human Services related events for photograph and storytelling opportunities


Minimum Qualifications

Internship Requirements: 

  • A sample of your work or portfolio is required. Without this, you will not be considered. 
  • Must be local 6/8/2026 – 8/28/2026 to attend in-person cohort meetings, activities, and any work-related tasks.
  • Must be at least 18 years old as of 6/8/2026.
  • Must have experience in Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Must have some education or experience in communications, marketing, and writing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in making content for and managing social media for an organization
  • Experience in videography
